The Dorset History Centre (DHC) collects any sound recording which relates to Dorset, is unique and of long term historical value. DHC currently holds around 500 hours of recordings, most of which are oral history. Themes covered in the collections include school days, transport, local industry and American soldiers in Weymouth during WWII. More information can be found on our catalogue: <>

Opening Times: 

Tuesday-Friday: 9am – 5pm; 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month: 9am - 4.30pm

Access conditions: 

To access original archive material you will need a reader’s ticket [CARN]. To obtain this ticket you will need to bring with you an official document or a combination of documents which shows your name, current address and signature; a driving licence is ideal. It is not necessary to make an appointment in advance of your visit. If you know the references for documents you wish to consult, you can order up to four items in advance so they are ready when you arrive; 48 hours notice would be helpful.
