Sound recordings in the National Library of Scotland Music Collections include about 23,000 published as well as unpublished unique sound recordings in a number of modern and older formats: wax cylinders (45), coarse groove discs (7,300), magnetic reels (700+), cassette tapes (1,300), vinyl discs (11,000), CDs (3000), data disks containing midi files (50). The collections mainly contain historic recordings of Scottish musicians and entertainers alongside some classical music. The vinyl collection contains mainly music of the mid-late 20th century folk music revival as well as Scottish and general art music. A fairly new area of collecting includes period performance recordings of traditional Scottish music. Please note that a large proprotion of these collections is not fully catalogued and much of the material can only be made accessible after digitisation.
